Xiggy rolled over in her sleep. Some far off, distant noise disturbed her sleep. Not that sleep was coming easy anyway. She was constantly worried about Blu and what he had gotten himself into. He never talked about it. I’m his wife. I want to help. It was hard to sleep when she felt so useless. Then of course when it really counted she failed. She was only half awake as she turned over and hugged a pillow. She heard some shuffling from another part of the impenetrable fortress they were taking shelter in. Blu, maybe Jenny. Neither slept much. So, she let the shuffling lull her back to sleep.
Blu was gone again. Damn that stubborn Halfling and his fool ideas. She’d never changed into a hyena before, but she found it surprisingly easy. Maybe it was just adrenaline that made the change so easy. Maybe it was the blind rage she was feeling. There wasn’t anything she could but run. So she ran. Ran to find her husband…and then to kill him if he wasn’t already dead. At least he was fairly ingenuous about how to leave a trail.
Finding him dead was like a worst nightmare come to life. While she was grateful that he wasn’t actually dead she was still angry. Angry, frustrated…sad. Was she crying? She didn’t allow herself to cry usually. Better he think that she was strong. It’s just the shock of thinking you had lost him; that you failed again.
She wasn’t angry. Not really. She really couldn’t be. Even if she wished that he would tell her what had happened and what she could do to help, it wasn’t necessary. She’d help anyway, when and if she could.
She didn’t know what she would do if she failed him again.
