The Rat Race
Name: Blubrax McBottletop
Race: halfling (hobbit)
Description: 2’8", floppy brown hair, one green eye, homely-looking but now scarred across the upper left side of his face.
Blu is a kind man, deeply in love with his wife and willing to give up anything for his family. Time spent out in the world has enlightened him to its cruel realities and hardened him from the innocent youth he once was. He cares very much for his brother, having almost grown numb to Lunx’s occasional atrocities. He has (he estimates) about 9 months left before his bargain is complete and the demon comes to claim his soul. He is afraid that his wife will no longer love him as much now that he has been disfigured. He also regrets that he will probably not be able to give her the family that he knows she dreams of.
Blubrax was born a twin, yet for most of his life he never knew his brother. His father left when he was young, taking Lunx with him and leaving Blu and his mother alone. Being an attractive lady, she soon married again and Blu became part of the rich McBottletop clan of Baxbegin. Although he never forgot his brother, over time Blu stopped missing his other half quite so much and got on with things. Still, there was always a lingering wonder about where Lunx was, what he was doing with his life, and if he would even recognise his brother is he returned.
His life was relatively comfortable- a kindly stepfather and several half siblings made for a happy family and he was moderately well educated. He had a natural aptitude for the more arcane subjects, which led his mother to banning him from access to anything magical. She would never tell him why. He dreamt of being a sailor, despite his inability to swim since like all good halflings he ate a lot and you shouldn’t go in the water after eating, but his mother happily encouraged his childish dreams – Blu later realised it was to dissuade him from his interest in magic. Blu spent many months happily learning the ropes of ships without once having to go in the water and the rocking made his stomach extra hardy towards food and alcohol. However, he soon understood that he could not be a captain in a world full of people far taller than him, and he reluctantly put that dream aside to help in the family home.
Aged 45, Blu was informed that he was to be married to a halfling girl from Baxend and had been since birth. This was something of a shock, but being an amiable sort of fellow, Blu readily accepted this announcement. When she arrived he was stunned. She was beautiful, and he wished he had cleaned up a little better before their meeting, or at least brought some flowers. Her name was Xigdestra, although she told him to call her Xiggy and he readily complied. He could see she wasn’t entirely impressed – he knew he wasn’t stunningly handsome after all – but they had some things in common. The wedding was set for summer.
However, before this time a visitor appeared in the village. He revealed himself to be Lunx von Ampleburger, long lost twin of Blu and the two were reunited. Blu found his twin to be a little strange, what with his bright orange mohican and bizarre behavioural tics. Still, he was a very accepting halfling, helped by the fact that he could clearly see his own face mirrored in his brother’s and they had an instant connection. After a few months of Lunx weirding out his extended family and Blu bonding with his fiancé, they decided to go travelling together. Lunx spoke often of the world outside and great adventure that awaited, and something in Blu heard the call. Xiggy decided to go with them and so they set out, completely ruining the family’s plans for a reunion feast to coincide with the wedding.
